on the authority of Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thābit, on the authority of ʿIkrima, or on the authority of Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "Deaf, dumb, blind", from goodness.

399- Al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, he said: Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me, on the authority of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "Deaf, dumb, blind", he says: They do not hear guidance, nor do they see it, nor do they comprehend it.

400- Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, he said: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, he said: Asbāṭ narrated to us, on the authority of al-Suddī in a report he mentioned, on the authority of Abū Mālik, and on the authority of Abū Ṣāliḥ, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās—and on the authority of Murra, on the authority of Ibn Masʿūd, and on the authority of some people among the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him: "Dumb", they are the mutes.

401- Bishr ibn Muʿādh narrated to us, he said: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us, on the authority of Saʿīd, on the authority of Qatāda, His statement "Deaf, dumb, blind": Deaf to the truth, so they do not hear it; blind to the truth, so they do not see it; dumb to the truth, so they do not speak it (1).

The discourse regarding the Interpretation (Ta'wil) of His statement: {so they will not return (18)}

Abū Jaʿfar said: He said: And His statement, "so they will not return," is a report from God, Exalted be His Praise, concerning these hypocrites—whom God described as purchasing error for guidance, and as being deaf to hearing goodness and truth, dumb to speaking both, and blind to seeing both—(2) that they will not return to desisting from their error, nor will they repent by turning back from their Hypocrisy. Thus He made the believers despair that these people would ever see right guidance, or speak truth, or listen to a caller to guidance, or take admonition and repent from their error, just as He made them despair of the Repentance of the leaders of the disbelievers among the People of the Book
