Tafsir at-Tabari: Jami' al-Bayan - Dar al-Tarbiyah wa al-Turath Edition

Mūsā al-Bazzār, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: Thunder is an Angel who drives the clouds with Glorification (Tasbih), as the camel-driver drives camels with his driving song.

428- al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, he said: Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbbād and Shabāba narrated to us, they said: Shuʿba narrated to us, from al-Ḥakam, from Mujāhid, he said: Thunder is an Angel driving the clouds.

429- Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq narrated to us, he said: Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī narrated to us, he said: ʿAttāb ibn Ziyād narrated to us, from ʿIkrima, he said: Thunder is an Angel in the clouds, gathering the clouds as the shepherd gathers camels.

430- And Bishr narrated to us, he said: Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatāda, he said: Thunder is a creation among the creation of God, Mighty and Majestic, hearing and obedient to God, Mighty and Majestic.

431- al-Qāsim ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿIkrima, he said: Thunder is an Angel commanded to drive the clouds and join them together, so that sound is his Glorification (Tasbih).

432- And al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujāhid, he said: Thunder is an Angel.

433- And al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: al-Ḥajjāj ibn al-Minhāl narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād ibn Salama narrated to us, from al-Mughīra ibn Sālim, from his father, or someone else, that ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib said: Thunder is an Angel.

434- al-Muthannā narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to us, he said: Ḥammād narrated to us, he said: Mūsā ibn Sālim Abū Jahḍam, client of Ibn ʿAbbās, informed us, he said: Ibn ʿAbbās wrote to Abū al-Jald asking him about thunder, and he said: Thunder is an Angel (1).

(1) Report 434 - This is a broken chain of transmission: Mūsā b. Sālim Abū Jahḍam: reliable, but his narration from Ibn ʿAbbās is Mursal. "Abū al-Jald": with a fatḥa on the jīm, a sukūn on the lām, and ending with an unpointed dāl. It occurred in the original manuscripts here, and in the following narrations, as "Abū al-Khald" with a khāʾ instead of a jīm, which is a misspelling. Abū al-Jald: he is Jīlān—with a kasra on the jīm—b. Abī Farwa, and it is said: Ibn Farwa al-Asadī al-Baṣrī, as al-Bukhārī mentioned in his biography in al-Kabīr 1/2/250. Ibn Abī Ḥātim said 1/1/547: "The possessor of the books of the Torah and the like." Then he narrated from Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal that he declared him reliable. Ibn Saʿd gave him a biography 7/1/161, and said: "Abū al-Jald al-Jawnī, a tribe of al-Azd, and his name is: Jīlān b. Farwa, and he was reliable." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in al-Thiqāt: 157, al-Dūlābī in al-Kunā 1: 139, and al-Zabīdī in Sharḥ al-Qāmūs (j-l-d) and (j-y-l). Al-Ḥāfiẓ mentioned him in Lisān al-Mīzān under the names 2: 144, and promised to give him a biography in the kunyas as "Abū al-Jald", but then he did not do so. Al-Ṭabarī narrated a report from him in al-Tārīkh 2: 203. It will come in report: 445 that he is "a man from the people of Hajar".
