Tafsir at-Tabari: Jami' al-Bayan - Dar al-Tarbiyah wa al-Turath Edition

He said: So we said: "We disagreed regarding the recitation." He said: So the face of the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) turned red, and he said: "Those before you were destroyed only by their disagreement among themselves." He said: Then he whispered something to ʿAlī, so ʿAlī said to us: "The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) commands you to recite as you were taught." (1)

14- Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from ʿĪsā ibn Qirṭās, from Zayd al-Qaṣṣār, from Zayd ibn Arqam, he said: We were with him in the mosque, and he spoke to us for a while, then he said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) and said: "ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd taught me to recite a Sūra, Zayd taught me to recite it, and Ubayy ibn Kaʿb taught me to recite it, and their recitations differed, so whose recitation should I adopt?" He said: So the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) remained silent. He said: And ʿAlī was beside him, so ʿAlī said: "Let every person recite as he was taught; each is good and fine." (2)

15- Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Yūnus informed me, from Ibn Shihāb, he said: ʿUrwa ibn al-Zubayr informed me: That al-Miswar ibn Makhrama and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAbd al-Qārī informed him: That they heard ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (May God be pleased with him) say: I heard Hishām ibn Ḥakīm reciting Sūrat al-Furqān during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him), so I listened to his recitation, and behold, he was reciting it according to many modes that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) had not taught me to recite. I was almost about to leap upon him in prayer, but I exercised patience until he said the salām. When he said the salām,

(1) Hadith 13: Its two chains of transmission are Sahih (Authentic) as well, and it is another narration of the preceding hadith. We did not find it with this chain of transmission and wording anywhere else.
(2) Hadith 14: This is a hadith with no basis. It was narrated by a liar, who is ʿĪsā b. Qirṭās. Ibn Maʿīn said of him: "Da'if (Weak), he is nothing; it is not permissible for anyone to narrate from him." Ibn Ḥibbān said: "He narrates Fabricated reports from reliable narrators; it is not permissible to use him as evidence." This liar invented a sheikh for himself from whom he narrated, naming him Zayd al-Qaṣṣār! We have not found a biography or mention of this sheikh in any of the reference works. This hadith was mentioned by al-Haythamī in Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid (7:153-154), and he said: "Al-Ṭabarānī narrated it, and in it is ʿĪsā b. Qirṭās, and he is abandoned." It is astonishing that al-Ḥāfiẓ mentions this hadith in al-Fatḥ (9:23) and attributes it to al-Ṭabarī and al-Ṭabarānī, then remains silent about clarifying its defect and weakness! May Allah forgive us and him.
