I grabbed him by his cloak and said: "Who taught you to recite this Sūra that I heard you reciting?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) taught me to recite it!" So I said: "You have lied, for by Allah, the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) taught me to recite this Sūra that I heard you reciting!" So I went, leading him to the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him), and I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I heard this man reciting Sūrat al-Furqān according to modes that you did not teach me, and you taught me to recite Sūrat al-Furqān!" He said: So the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Release him, O ʿUmar. Recite, O Hishām." So he recited before him the recitation that I had heard him reciting, and the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Thus was it revealed." Then the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Recite, O ʿUmar." So I recited the recitation that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) had taught me, and the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Thus was it revealed." Then the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) said: "Indeed, this Qurʾān was revealed according to seven modes, so recite whatever is easy from it." (1)

16- Aḥmad ibn Manṣūr narrated to me, he said: ʿAbd al-Ṣamad ibn ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us, he said: Ḥarb ibn Thābit from Banū Sulaym narrated to us, he said: Isḥāq ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Ṭalḥa narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, he said: A man recited in the presence of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (May God be pleased with him), and he corrected him. So he said: "I recited before the Messenger of Allah (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) and he did not correct me." He said: So they brought their dispute to the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him), and he said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you not teach me to recite such-and-such a verse?" He said: "Yes!" He said: So something fell into ʿUmar's heart, and the Prophet (Peace and blessings of God be upon him) recognized

His statement: "I was about to spring upon him (usāwiruhu)" means I was about to leap at him and strike him. His statement: "So I restrained myself until he said the salām" matches al-Bukhārī's narration, while in al-Musnad it says: "So I watched until he said the salām," meaning I waited.
