Thursday, and He created Adam on Friday. Then a group of the jinn disbelieved, so the angels used to descend to them on the earth and fight them, so blood was shed, and corruption spread on the earth. (1)

And others said regarding the interpretation of His statement, "I am placing a successor upon the earth": that is, a succession where some succeed others, and they are the offspring of Adam who succeed their father Adam, each generation succeeding the generation that passed before it. And this is a view reported from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī.

And a parallel to it is what:

603- Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to me, saying: Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, from Ibn Sābiṭ regarding His statement: "I am placing a successor upon the earth. They said: Will You place therein one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood?" He said: They meant thereby the Children of Adam, peace and blessings of God be upon him.

604- Yūnus narrated to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said: Allah, exalted be His mention, said to the angels: I intend to create a creation on the earth and place a successor therein. At that time, Allah had no creation except the angels, and the earth had no creation in it. (2)

And this statement admits what was reported from al-Ḥasan, and it also admits that Ibn Zayd intended that Allah informed the angels that He was placing on the earth a successor for Himself who would judge among His creation according to His judgment, similar to what:

605- Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, saying: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: Asbāṭ narrated to us, from al-Suddī, in a report he mentioned from Abū Mālik and from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās—and from Murra, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from some of the Companions of the Prophet,
