to the angels and said: ‘Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful,’ up to His statement: ‘Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.’” He said: And that was when they said: “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You?” He said: When they realized that He was placing a successor upon the earth, they said among themselves: “God will never create a creation but that we are more knowledgeable and more noble than it.” So God wanted to inform them that He had favored Adam over them, and He taught Adam the names, all of them. So He said to the angels: “Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful,” up to His statement: “And I know what you reveal and what you used to conceal.” What they revealed was when they said: “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood?” and what they concealed among themselves was their saying: “God will never create a creation but that we are more knowledgeable and more noble than it.” Thus they realized that God had favored Adam over them in knowledge and nobility. And Ibn Zayd said, as narrated to me by:

614- Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said: When God created Hellfire, the angels were terrified of it with a severe terror, and they said: “Our Lord, why did You create this Hellfire? And for what purpose did You create it?” He said: “For those who disobey Me among My creation.” He said: And God had no creation on that day except the angels, and the earth had no creation upon it, for Adam was created only after that. And he recited the statement of God: {Has there come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing mentioned?} [Sūrat Al-Insān: 1]. He said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: “O Messenger of God, would that that time had lasted!” (2) Then he said: The angels said: “O Lord, will a time come upon us in which we disobey You?”—not seeing any creation for Him other than themselves. He said: “No, but I intend to create a creation upon the earth
