and place upon it a successor who will shed blood and cause corruption on the earth.” So the angels said: “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood? You have chosen us, so place us upon it, for we glorify You with praise, sanctify You, and act in obedience to You therein.” The angels found it a grave matter that God should place upon the earth those who disobey Him, so He said: “Indeed, I know that which you do not know.” “O Adam, inform them of their names.” So he said: “So-and-so, and so-and-so.” He said: So when they saw what knowledge God had bestowed upon him, they conceded Adam's superiority over them; but the wicked Iblīs refused to concede to him, saying: “I am better than him: You created me from fire and created him from clay.” He said: “Get down from it, for it is not for you to be arrogant herein.” (1)

And Ibn Isḥāq said, as narrated to us by:

615- Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Salamah ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, who said: When God willed to create Adam by His power, to test him and test [others] through him, because of His knowledge of what was within His angels and all His creation—and the first trial with which the angels were tested contained that which they liked and disliked, as a trial and purification for what was within them that they did not know, though God's knowledge encompassed it from them—He gathered the angels from the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, then He said: “I am placing a successor upon the earth”—an inhabitant and a developer to reside in it and build it up—a successor, not from among you. (2) Then He informed them of His knowledge concerning them, saying: “They will cause corruption on earth, shed blood, and commit acts of disobedience.” So they all said: “Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we glorify You with praise and sanctify You,”
