The statement regarding the interpretation of His, the Exalted's, statement: {and sanctify You}

Abū Jaʿfar said: Sanctification (taqdīs) is purification and exaltation, and from it is their saying: "Glorious (Subbūḥ), Holy (Quddūs)," meaning by their saying: "Glorious," declaring God free [from imperfection], and by their saying: "Holy," purification and exaltation of Him. For this reason, it is said of the land: "holy land," meaning by that, the purified. Thus, the meaning of the angels' statement: "while we glorify You with Your praise," is: we declare You free and exonerate You from what the people of polytheism attribute to You, and we pray to You. "And sanctify You," we attribute to You what is among Your attributes, of purity from defilements and what the people of disbelief in You have attributed to You. It has also been said: The angels' sanctification of their Lord is their prayer to Him. As in:-

621- Al-Ḥasan b. Yaḥyā narrated to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, he said: Maʿmar informed us, from Qatāda, regarding His statement: "and sanctify You," he said: Sanctification is prayer (1).

And some of them said: "and sanctify You": we exalt You and magnify You.

Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: Hāshim b. al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: Abū Saʿīd al-Muʾaddib narrated to us, he said: Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, regarding His statement: "while we glorify You with Your praise, and sanctify You," he said: we exalt You and magnify You (2).

623- Muḥammad b. ʿAmr narrated to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, he said: ʿĪsā narrated to me—and al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Abū Ḥudhayfa narrated to us, he said: Shibl narrated to us—all of them from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, regarding the statement of God: "and sanctify You," he said: we exalt You and magnify You (3).
