and pray to You, obey You, and do not disobey You?—while they had no knowledge of what Iblis was harboring in his flank of arrogance against his Lord—so their Lord said to them: I know other than what you say regarding some of you. And that was what was hidden from them regarding the matter of Iblis, and his harboring of the arrogance he was harboring. And for that saying of theirs, and their describing themselves with a general description, they were reprimanded.

The interpretation of the statement of Exalted be His Remembrance: {And He taught Adam}

640- Muhammad ibn Jarir narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Humayd narrated to us, he said: Ya'qub al-Qummi narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Abi al-Mughira, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, he said: The Lord of Might sent the Angel of Death, who took from the surface of the earth, from its sweet and its salty, and created Adam from it. Thus he was named Adam because he was created from the surface (adim) of the earth (1).

641- Ahmad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us, he said: 'Amr ibn Thabit narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, from 'Ali, he said: Adam was created from the surface of the earth, containing the good, the wholesome, and the bad; so all of that you see in his offspring, the righteous and the bad (2).
