30- Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: Ibn Numayr narrated to us, he said: Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid narrated to us—and ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Bayān al-Qannād narrated to us, he said: Muḥammad ibn Yazīd al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl—from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from his grandfather, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, he said: I was in the mosque when a man entered to pray and recited a recitation that I rejected from him. Then another man entered and recited a recitation different from that of his companion. So we all went in to see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him. He said: So I said: "O Messenger of Allah, this man recited a recitation that I rejected from him, then this other man entered and recited a recitation different from that of his companion." So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, ordered them both and they recited, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, commended both of their readings. There fell into my heart such denial as had not occurred even during the Jahiliyya! When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, saw what had overcome me, he struck my chest, and I broke into a sweat as if I were looking at Allah out of fear. Then he said to me: "O Ubayy, word was sent to me: 'Recite the Qur'an according to one mode,'
