Abū Saʿīd al-Yaḥmadī narrated to us: Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, he said: Sawār ibn al-Jaʿd al-Yaḥmadī narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, regarding His statement: "of the jinn," he said: Iblīs was among the jinn whom the angels banished, so some of the angels captured him and took him up to heaven. (1)

699 - And ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to me, he said: Abū Naṣr Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad al-Khallāl narrated to me, he said: Sunayd ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, he said: Hushaym narrated to us, he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaḥyā informed us, from Mūsā ibn Numayr and ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd ibn Kāmil, from Saʿd ibn Masʿūd, he said: The angels used to fight the jinn, and Iblīs was taken captive when he was small, so he was with the angels and worshipped alongside them. When they were commanded to prostrate to Adam, they prostrated, but Iblīs refused. Therefore, Allah said: "Except Iblīs, he was of the jinn." (2)

700 - And Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Salama ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us, he said: Al-Mubārak ibn Mujāhid Abū al-Azhar narrated to us, from Sharīk ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Namir, from Ṣāliḥ, the freedman of al-Tawʾama, from Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: "Indeed, among the angels is a tribe called the Jinn, and Iblīs was among them. Iblīs used to manage what is between heaven and earth, but he disobeyed, so Allah transformed him into an accursed devil." (3)

701 - He said: And Yūnus narrated to us, from Ibn Wahb, he said: Ibn Zayd said: Iblīs is the father of the jinn, just as Adam is the father of mankind. (4)

And the rationale of those who held this opinion is that Allah, glorious is His praise, informed in His Book that He created Iblīs from scorching fire and from a smokeless flame of fire, while He did not inform concerning the angels that He created them from any of that; and that Allah, glorious is His praise, informed that he was of the jinn—so they said: It is not permissible that he be attributed to other than what Allah attributed him to. They said: And Iblīs has offspring and descendants, whereas angels do not reproduce or bear offspring.
