And Ruʾba said:

And on Thursday the five armies arrived ... and in the faces was paleness and despair (1)

Meaning by it depression and gloom.

If a questioner says: If Iblīs is, as you said, on the pattern of ifʿīl from iblās, why was it not fully declined? It is said: Its declension was abandoned due to heaviness, since it was a name unlike any other among Arabic names, so the Arabs—being as such—likened it to foreign names that do not decline. They said: "I passed by Isḥāq," so they did not decline it, though it comes from "Allah made him far off (asḥaqahu Isḥāqan)", because it originally occurred as a non-Arabic name, then the Arabs named people with it, so it followed its course—being among foreign names—in inflection and was not fully declined. Likewise "Ayyūb", it is merely fayʿūl from āba yaʾūbu.

And the interpretation of His statement: "he refused"—He, majestic be His praise, means thereby Iblīs, that he abstained from prostrating to Adam and did not prostrate to him. "And was arrogant"—He means thereby that he magnified himself and behaved arrogantly against obedience to Allah in prostrating to Adam. And this, even though it is a report from Allah, majestic be His praise, about Iblīs, is nonetheless a reprimand to his likes among Allah's creation who act arrogantly against submitting to Allah's command, complying with His obedience in what He commanded them and what He prohibited them, and surrendering to Him regarding the rights He made obligatory for some of them over others. And among those who acted arrogantly against submitting to Allah's command, humbling themselves to His obedience, and surrendering to His decree regarding the rights of others He imposed upon them, were the Jews who were living in the place of migration of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and their rabbis who knew the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and his description, knowing that he was Allah's messenger. Then they acted arrogantly—despite their knowledge of that—against affirming his prophethood and submitting to his obedience, out of transgression and envy toward him. So Allah reprimanded them through His report about Iblīs
