Ibn ʿAbbās — and from Murra, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from some people among the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him: that the enemy of God, Iblīs, swore by the might of God that he would surely mislead Adam, his offspring, and his wife, except His sincere servants among them, after God cursed him, and after he was expelled from Paradise, and before he descended to the earth. And God taught Adam the names, all of them. (1)

709 - And Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, saying: Salama narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: When God finished with Iblīs and His reprimanding him, and he refused anything but disobedience and He brought the curse upon him, then expelled him from Paradise, He turned to Adam, having taught him all the names, and said: "O Adam, inform them of their names," up to His statement: "Indeed, You are the Knowing, the Wise." (2)

Then the people of interpretation differed regarding the state in which Adam's wife was created, and the time she was made a tranquil abode for him. So Ibn ʿAbbās said, according to what:-

710 - Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, saying: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: Asbāṭ narrated to us, from al-Suddī, in a report he mentioned, from Abū Mālik, and from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Ibn ʿAbbās — and from Murra, from Ibn Masʿūd, and from some people among the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him: Iblīs was expelled from Paradise when he was cursed, and Adam was made to dwell in Paradise. He was walking in it alone, having no spouse to find tranquility in, so he slept a sleep and woke up, and behold, at his head was a seated woman whom God had created from his rib. He asked her: "Who are you?" She said: "A woman." He said: "And why were you created?" She said: "So that you may find tranquility in me." The angels said to him — testing how far his knowledge reached —: "What is her name, O Adam?" He said: "Ḥawwāʾ." They said: "And why was she named Ḥawwāʾ?" He said: "Because she was created from a living thing." So God said to him: "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom plentifully wherever you wish." (3)
