on the authority of Abū Rawq, on the authority of al-Ḍaḥḥāk, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās: "And eat therefrom in abundance wherever you will," he said: raghad is abundance of living. (1)

So the meaning of the verse is: We said: O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise, and eat from Paradise an abundant, pleasant provision of living wherever you will.

717 - As Bishr ibn Muʿādh narrated to us, he said: Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us, he said: Saʿīd narrated to us, on the authority of Qatāda, His statement: "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in abundance wherever you will": Then indeed, the trial that was prescribed for creation was prescribed for Adam, just as creation was tried before him, in that Allah, exalted be His praise, made lawful for him whatever was in Paradise to eat therefrom in abundance wherever he wished, except for a single tree that he was forbidden from, and a warning was advanced to him regarding it; so the trial did not cease with him until he fell into that which he was forbidden from. (2)

The interpretation of the statement of the Exalted: {And do not approach this tree}

Abū Jaʿfar said: And trees (al-shajar) in the speech of the Arabs is everything that stands upon a trunk, and of that is the statement of Allah, exalted be His praise: {(And the stars and trees prostrate)} [Sūrat al-Raḥmān: 6], meaning by "the stars" (al-najm) that which sprouts from the earth of vegetation, and by "trees" (al-shajar) that which stands upright on a trunk.

Then the people of interpretation differed regarding the specific identity of the tree whose fruit Adam was forbidden from eating. Some of them said: It is the ear of grain.
