ʿAbbād b. al-ʿAwwām, he said: Sufyān b. Ḥusayn narrated to us, from Yaʿlā b. Muslim, from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, regarding His statement "And do not approach this tree", he said: The grapevine.

738 - And Aḥmad b. Isḥāq narrated to us, he said: Abū Aḥmad narrated to us, he said: Sufyān narrated to us, from al-Suddī, he said: Grapes.

739 - And al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Abū Maʿshar, from Muḥammad b. Qays, he said: Grapes. (1)

And others said: It is the fig tree.

• Mention of those who said that:

740 - al-Qāsim narrated to us, he said: al-Ḥusayn narrated to us, he said: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, from one of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, he said: A fig tree. (2)

Abū Jaʿfar said: And the statement regarding that according to us is that God, may His praise be exalted, informed His servants that Adam and his wife ate from the tree from which their Lord forbade them to eat, so they committed the sin which He forbade them from committing by eating what they ate from it, after God, may His praise be exalted, had made clear to them the specific tree from which He forbade them to eat, and pointed it out to them by His statement: "And do not approach this tree", and God, may His praise be exalted, did not establish for His servants who are addressed by the Qur'an any indication as to which of the trees of Paradise His prohibition to Adam to approach applied, neither by explicitly stating its name, nor by an indication pointing to it. And if God had any pleasure in the knowledge of which one it was, He would not have left His servants without establishing an indication for them pointing to it by which they could arrive at knowing its specific identity, so that they might obey Him through their knowledge of it, just as He did that in everything the knowledge of which brings Him pleasure.

So the correct view regarding that is to say: God, may His praise be exalted, forbade Adam and his wife from eating
