747 - Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, he said: I was told that the first thing he began his plot against them both with was that he wailed over them a wailing that grieved them when they heard it, and they said, "What makes you weep?" He said, "I weep for you both, for you will die and leave behind the bliss and honor you are in." So that took root in their minds. Then he came to them and whispered to them, saying, "O Adam, shall I guide you to the tree of eternity and a kingdom that does not decay?" And he said, {"Your Lord only forbade you from this tree lest you become angels or become of the immortals. And he swore to them both, 'Indeed, I am to you one of the sincere advisors.'"} That is, lest you become angels, or abide forever—if you are not angels—in the bliss of Paradise so you never die. God, majestic is His praise, says: {"So he brought about their fall through deception."}

748 - Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said: The Devil (Shayṭān) whispered to Eve concerning the tree until he brought her to it, then he made it appealing in Adam's eyes. He said: So Adam called her for his need, and she said, "No, unless you come here!" When he came, she said, "No, unless you eat from this tree!" He said: So they both ate from it, and their private parts became exposed to them. He said: Adam went fleeing in Paradise, so his Lord called out to him, "O Adam, are you fleeing from Me?" He said, "No, my Lord, but out of bashfulness before You." He said, "O Adam, from where were you overtaken?" He said, "From Eve's side, O Lord." God said, "Then it is binding upon Me that I cause her to bleed once every month, just as she caused this tree to bleed; and that I make her foolish, though I had created her forbearing; and that I make her carry with hardship and deliver with hardship, though I had made her carry with ease and deliver with ease." Ibn Zayd said: Had it not been for the affliction that befell Eve, the women of the world would not menstruate, they would be forbearing, and they would carry with ease and deliver with ease.
