750 - Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Ṭāwūs al-Yamānī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: The enemy of God, Iblīs, presented himself to the beasts of the earth to see which of them would carry him so he could enter Paradise with it and speak to Adam and his wife. All the beasts refused him this, until he spoke to the serpent and said to it, "I will protect you from the son of Adam, so you are under my covenant of protection if you bring me into Paradise." So it placed him between two of its fangs, then entered with him, and he spoke to them both from its mouth. It was clothed, walking on four legs, so God stripped it naked and made it walk on its belly. He said: Ibn ʿAbbās says, "Kill it wherever you find it, violate the enemy of God's protection regarding it."
