ibn Sharīk narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Ḥuṣayn ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from Ḥumayd ibn Nabhān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiya, that he said: His statement: "Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He turned to him in forgiveness", Adam said: "O Allah, there is no deity except You, glory be to You and praise be to You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You; turn to me in forgiveness, for You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful." (1)

787 - And al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, saying: Abū Ghassān narrated to us, saying: Abū Zuhayr reported to us—and Aḥmad ibn Isḥāq al-Ahwāzī narrated to us, saying: Abū Aḥmad informed us, saying: Sufyān and Qays narrated to us—both from Khuṣayf, from Mujāhid concerning His statement: "Then Adam received words from his Lord", he said: His statement: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us", until he finished it. 788 - And al-Muthannā narrated to me, saying: Abū Ḥudhayfa narrated to us, saying: Shibl narrated to me, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid: He used to say concerning the statement of Allah: "Then Adam received words from his Lord": The words were: "O Allah, there is no deity except You, glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for You are the best of forgivers. O Allah, there is no deity except You, glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so have mercy on me, for You are the best of the merciful. O Allah, there is no deity except You, glory be to You and praise be to You. My Lord, I have wronged myself, so turn to me in forgiveness, for You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful." (3)

789 - And Ibn Wakīʿ narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, from al-Naḍr ibn ʿArabī, from Mujāhid: "Then Adam received words from his Lord": It is His statement: "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us", the verse. (4)
