from Mujāhid, from Ibn Abī Laylā, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, similar to it. (1)
38- Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Hishām ibn Saʿd informed me, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, that he said: I heard a man reciting in Sūrat al-Naḥl a recitation differing from my recitation, then I heard another reciting it in a recitation differing from that. So I went with them both to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, and said: "I heard these two reciting in Sūrat al-Naḥl, so I asked them: 'Who taught you both to recite?' They both said: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him.' So I said: 'I shall take you both to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, since you both differ from what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, taught me to recite.'" Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said to one of them: "Recite." So he recited, and he said: "You have done well." Then he said to the other: "Recite." So he recited, and he said: "You have done well." Ubayy said: "So I found in myself the whispering of Satan, until my face turned red, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, recognized that in my face. So he struck with his hand against my chest, then said: 'O Allah, drive Satan away from him! O Ubayy, a coming visitor from my Lord came to me and said: "Allah commands you to recite the Qur'an according to one mode." So I said: "My Lord, lighten it for me." Then he came to me a second time and said: "Allah commands you to recite the Qur'an according to one mode." So I said: "My Lord, lighten it for my nation." Then he came to me a third time and said the like of that, and I said the like of it. Then he came to me a fourth time and said: "Allah commands you to recite the Qur'an according to seven modes, and for every reply you have a request." So I said: "O Lord, forgive my nation! O Lord, forgive my nation!" And I stored away the third as intercession for my nation on the Day of Resurrection.'" (2)
