did not reach the knowledge of that except through revelation (waḥy) from God and His sending down of that to him — because they were at a position regarding the knowledge of its authenticity that no other nation occupied. For that reason, He, exalted be His praise, singled out their address with His statement, "O Children of Israel," just as:-

800- Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, saying: Salama narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, from ʿIkrima, or from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding His statement: "O Children of Israel", he said: O People of the Book, referring to the rabbis of the Jews. (1)

The discourse on the interpretation of His statement: ﴿Remember My favor which I bestowed upon you﴾

Abū Jaʿfar said: And His favor with which He favored the Children of Israel, exalted be His mention, was His selecting prophets from among them, His sending down the Scriptures upon them, and His rescuing them from the affliction and adversity they were in under Pharaoh and his people, bringing them to empowerment in the earth, gushing forth springs of water from the rock, and feeding them manna and quails. So He, exalted be His praise, commanded their posterity that what had passed from Him unto their ancestors should be kept in mind, and that they should not forget His beneficence to their predecessors and forefathers, lest there befall them of retribution what befell those among them who forgot His favors and disbelieved in them, denying His benefactions toward them. As:-

801- Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, saying: Salama narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, the freed slave of Zayd ibn Thābit, from ʿIkrima, or from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: "Remember My favor which I bestowed upon you", meaning My blessings upon you and upon your forefathers, when He saved them from Pharaoh and his people.
