The discourse regarding the interpretation of the statement of the Exalted: ﴿and fulfill My covenant, I will fulfill your covenant (40)﴾

Abū Jaʿfar He said: Our explanation regarding the meaning of "covenant" has already preceded in what has passed of this book of ours (1), as well as the disagreement among those who differed regarding its interpretation, and what we consider to be the correct view concerning it (2). And in this place, it refers to the covenant of Allah and His injunction that He took upon the Children of Israel in the Torah: that they must clarify to the people the matter of Muḥammad Peace and blessings of God be upon him, that he is a Messenger, and that they find him written in their possession in the Torah as Allah's Prophet, and that they believe in him and in what he brought from Allah.

"I will fulfill your covenant": And His covenant with them was that if they did so, He would admit them to Paradise, just as He, majestic is His praise, said: {And Allah had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve leaders. And Allah said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer and give zakat and believe in My messengers and assist them and loan Allah a goodly loan, I will surely remove from you your misdeeds and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever among you disbelieves after that has strayed from the soundness of the way."} [Surah al-Māʾida: 12], and as He said: {So I will decree it for those who fear Me and give zakat and those who believe in Our verses—those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written in their possession in the Torah and the Gospel, who commands them what is right and forbids them what is wrong, and makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the evil things, and relieves them of their burden and the shackles which were upon them.
