So he placed "practicing" (ta'tiya) in the subjunctive mood according to the interpretation we mentioned regarding His statement "and conceal", because he did not mean: "Do not forbid a character and do not practice the like of it," but rather its meaning is: "Do not forbid a character while you practice the like of it." Thus the first was a prohibition, and the second was an informative clause, so he placed the informative clause in the subjunctive mood when conjunction was made to something unlike its form.

As for the first perspective of these two perspectives that we mentioned the verse bears, it accords with the view of Ibn ʿAbbās, which:

827 - Abū Kurayb narrated to us, he said: ʿUthmān ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, he said: Bishr ibn ʿUmāra narrated to us, from Abū Rawq, from al-Ḍaḥḥāk, from Ibn ʿAbbās, regarding His statement: "and conceal the truth," he says: And do not conceal the truth while you know.

828 - Ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us, he said: Salama ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us, from Ibn Isḥāq, from Muḥammad ibn Abī Muḥammad, from ʿIkrima or from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: "and conceal the truth," meaning: and do not conceal the truth.

As for the second perspective of them, it accords with the view of Abū al-ʿĀliya and Mujāhid.

829 - Al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: Ādam narrated to us, he said: Abū Jaʿfar narrated to us, from al-Rabīʿ, from Abū al-ʿĀliya: "and conceal the truth while you know," he said: They concealed the sending of Muḥammad, peace and blessings of God be upon him.

830 - Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, from ʿĪsā ibn Maymūn, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, the like thereof.

831 - Al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Abū Ḥudhayfa narrated to us, he said: Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, the like thereof.
