And He means by His statement: {except for the humble}: except for those who submissively submit to His obedience, who fear His severe punishments, and who believe in His promise and His threat. As:

856- Al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, he said: Muʿāwiya ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to me, from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭalḥa, from Ibn ʿAbbās: {except for the humble}, he said: meaning those who believe in what Allāh sent down.

857- And al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Ādam al-ʿAsqalānī narrated to us, he said: Abū Jaʿfar narrated to us, from al-Rabīʿ, from Abū al-ʿĀliya, regarding His statement: {except for the humble}, he said: meaning those who fear.

858- And Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to me, he said: Abū ʿĀṣim narrated to us, he said: Sufyān narrated to us, from Jābir, from Mujāhid: {except for the humble}, he said: the true believers. (1)

859- And al-Muthannā narrated to me, he said: Abū Ḥudhayfa narrated to us, he said: Shibl narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Najīḥ, from Mujāhid, the like of it.

860- And Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, he said: Ibn Wahb informed us, he said: Ibn Zayd said: Humility (khushūʿ) is fear and dread of Allāh. And he recited the statement of Allāh: {humbled from humiliation} [al-Shūrā: 45]. He said: The fear that descended upon them has humiliated them, and they became humble to Him.
