and not a thinking in doubt. And he recited: {Indeed, I thought that I would meet my account}.

The discourse regarding the interpretation of the statement of Allāh, the Exalted: {that they are going to meet their Lord}

Abū Jaʿfar said: If a questioner says to us: How was it said that "they are going to meet their Lord", where "those who meet" was annexed in genitive construct to the Lord, blessed and exalted be He, when you know that its meaning is: "those who think that they will meet their Lord"? And since the meaning is such, it is part of the speech of the Arabs to omit annexation and retain the letter nūn; the nūn is dropped and annexed only in nouns derived from verbs when they carry the sense of a past action (faʿala). But if they carry the sense of present/future (yafʿalu) and active participle (fāʿil), their rule is to retain the nūn and omit annexation.

It is said: There is no disagreement among all those knowledgeable in the languages and dialects of the Arabs regarding the permissibility of annexing a noun derived from faʿala and yafʿalu and dropping the nūn while it carries the sense of yafʿalu and fāʿil—meaning in the sense of the future or present state of the action before it has concluded. Therefore, there is no basis for the questioner's inquiry about that: "Why was it said?" Rather, the grammarians differed only concerning the reason for which it was annexed and the nūn dropped.

So the grammarians of al-Baṣra said: The nūn was dropped from {going to meet their Lord} and similar words among verbs that take the form of nouns while carrying the sense of yafʿalu and the sense of what has not yet concluded, out of deeming it heavy, though it is intended, just as He, glorious be His praise, said: {Every soul shall taste death} [Āl ʿImrān: 185, al-Anbiyāʾ: 35, al-ʿAnkabūt: 57], and as He said: {Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as a trial for them} [al-Qamar: 27] when He had not yet sent it (1); and as the poet said:
