doubled the person seeking intercession through him, so he became an even pair (shafʿ) through him. Thus, the person in need—prior to seeking intercession through him for his need—was single, so his companion became an intercessor (shāfiʿ) for him regarding it, and his request on his behalf and regarding his need became intercession (shafāʿa). For this reason, the holder of preemption in a house or land is called a shafīʿ, because the seller becomes an even pair through him.

So the interpretation of the verse is: And fear a Day when no soul shall settle on behalf of another soul any right owed to Allah, Whose praise is Exalted, nor to anyone else, nor will Allah accept from it the intercession of any intercessor, thereby waiving what is owed by it of a right.

And it was said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, addressed the people of this verse with what He addressed them with in it because they were among the Jews of the Children of Israel, and they used to say: "We are the children of Allah, His beloved ones, and the offspring of His prophets, and our forefathers will intercede for us with Him." So Allah, Majestic and Exalted, informed them that no soul shall settle anything on behalf of another soul on the Day of Resurrection, nor shall intercession from anyone be accepted from it concerning it, until every rightful claimant is given his full right from it. Just as:

880- ʿAbbās ibn Abī Ṭālib narrated to me, saying: Ḥajjāj ibn Nuṣayr narrated to us, from Shuʿba, from al-ʿAwwām ibn Murājim—a man from Qays ibn Thaʿlaba—from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān: that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: "The hornless sheep will surely take retaliation from the horned sheep on the Day of Resurrection, just as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: {And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all} [Al-Anbiya: 47]... the verse."
