Tafsir at-Tabari: Jami' al-Bayan - Dar al-Tarbiyah wa al-Turath Edition

The discourse regarding the Interpretation of the statement of the Exalted: ﴿and nor shall compensation be taken from it (48)﴾

Abū Jaʿfar said: "Compensation" (ʿadl)—in the speech of the Arabs, with an fatha on the ʿayn—means ransom, just as:

881 - Al-Muthannā ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, saying: Ādam narrated to us, saying: Abū Jaʿfar narrated to us, from al-Rabīʿ, from Abū al-ʿĀliya: {nor shall compensation be taken from it}, He said: meaning a ransom.

882 - Mūsā ibn Hārūn narrated to me, saying: ʿAmr ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: Asbāṭ ibn Naṣr narrated to us, from al-Suddī: {nor shall compensation be taken from it}: As for ʿadl, it equals it in value (yaʿdiluhā) from equity; he says: Even if it were to bring the earth full of gold to ransom itself therewith, it would not be accepted from it.

883 - Al-Ḥasan ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Razzāq informed us, saying: Maʿmar informed us from Qatāda regarding His statement: {nor shall compensation be taken from it}, He said: Even if it brought everything, it would not be accepted from it.

884 - Al-Qāsim ibn al-Ḥasan narrated to us, saying: Ḥusayn narrated to us, saying: Ḥajjāj narrated to me, from Ibn Jurayj, saying: Mujāhid said: Ibn ʿAbbās said: {nor shall compensation be taken from it}, He said: a substitute, and the substitute is the ransom.

885 - Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to me, saying: Ibn Wahb informed us, saying: Ibn Zayd said: {nor shall compensation be taken from it}, He said: If it possessed the earth full of gold, it would not be accepted from it as a ransom. He said: And even if it brought everything, it would not be accepted from it.

886 - And Nujayḥ ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, saying: ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm narrated to us, saying: Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from his father, from ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Mulāʾī, from a man of Banū Umayya—from the people of Syria, whom he praised well—who said: It was asked: O Messenger of God, what is ʿadl? He said: ʿAdl is ransom (1).

(1) Hadith: 886 - Najīḥ ibn Ibrāhīm: I did not find in all the references before me any biographical entry other than that of "Najīḥ ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Kirmānī" in Lisān al-Mīzān (6/149), stating that he is a Kūfan and trustworthy, narrating from Abū Nuʿaym, so he belongs to the generation of al-Ṭabarī's teachers. The most plausible view is that he is the one. ʿAlī ibn Ḥakīm—with a faṭḥa on the ḥāʾ—is al-Awdī al-Kūfī, and he is trustworthy, from among the teachers of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥumayd al-Ruʿāsī and his father are both trustworthy. ʿAmr ibn Qays al-Mulāʾī—with a ḍamma on the mīm and a single lām—al-Kūfī: trustworthy, from among the followers of the Successors. He narrated this hadith Marfu', from a man whose name he left obscure while praising him, and the most plausible view is that he is a Successor (Tabi'i). Thus, the chain of transmission is Mursal or Munqati', so it is Da'if (Weak). I did not find it anywhere except in al-Ṭabarī; Ibn Kathīr transmitted it from him (1/161), as did al-Suyūṭī (1/68).
