When Abū Bakr passed away and ʿUmar became [caliph] (1), he wrote that into a single sheet, and it remained with him. When he passed away, the sheet remained with Ḥafṣa, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him. Then Ḥudhayfa ibn al-Yamān arrived from a battle he fought at Marj Armenia (2), and he did not enter his house until he came to ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, save the people!" ʿUthmān said: "And what is that?" He said: "I fought at Marj Armenia, and the people of Iraq and the people of Syria were present there. The people of Syria were reading according to the recitation of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, bringing what the people of Iraq had not heard, so the people of Iraq declared them disbelievers. And the people of Iraq were reading according to the recitation of Ibn Masʿūd, bringing what the people of Syria had not heard, so the people of Syria declared them disbelievers." Zayd said: "So ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān ordered me to write a Muṣḥaf for him, and he said: 'I am joining with you an intelligent, eloquent man, so whatever you two agree upon, write it down, and whatever you differ in, refer it to me.'" So he joined Abān ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ with him. He said: "When we reached {The sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you} [Sūrat al-Baqara: 248], Zayd said: I said: 'al-Tābūh', and Abān ibn Saʿīd said: 'al-Tābūt', so we referred that to ʿUthmān, and he wrote: 'al-Tābūt'. He said: "When I finished, I reviewed it once, and I did not find in it this verse: {Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah; of them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and of them is he who awaits [his chance], and they have not altered [their commitment] in the least} [Sūrat al-Aḥzāb: 23]. He said: "So I searched among the Emigrants (Muhajirien), asking them about it, but I did not find it with any of them. Then I searched among the Helpers (Ansar), asking them about it, but I did not find it with any of them, until I found it with Khuzayma ibn Thābit, so I wrote it down.
