to him is what you suffer, concerned over you, to the believers kind and merciful. But if they turn away, say: 'Sufficient for me is Allah; there is no deity except Him. On Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne.'} [Sūrat al-Tawba: 128, 129]. So I searched among the Emigrants (Muhajirien), but I did not find them with any of them. Then I searched among the Helpers (Ansar), asking them about them, but I did not find them with any of them, until I found them with another man also named Khuzayma, so I established them at the end of 'Barā'a'; and had they completed three verses, I would have made them a Sūra on their own. Then I reviewed it another time, and I found nothing missing in it. Then ʿUthmān sent to Ḥafṣa asking her to give him the sheet, and he swore to her that he would return it to her, so she gave it to him. He then reviewed the Muṣḥaf against it, and they did not differ in anything. So he returned it to her, and his heart was pleased, and he ordered the people to write Muṣḥafs. When Ḥafṣa died, he sent to ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar regarding the sheet with a firm demand, so he gave it to them, and it was thoroughly washed (1).

60- Yūnus ibn ʿAbd al-Aʿlā also narrated to me, he said: Naʿīm ibn Ḥammād narrated to us, he said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from ʿUmāra ibn Ghaziyya, from Ibn Shihāb, from Khārija ibn Zayd, from his father Zayd ibn Thābit, the like of it exactly.

61- Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to me, he said: Ibn ʿUlayya narrated to us, he said: Ayyūb narrated to us, from Abū Qilāba, he said: During the caliphate of ʿUthmān, a teacher would teach the recitation of

Then he said regarding this report narrated by al-Ṭabarī: "ʿUmāra ibn Ghaziyya brought a strange narration, narrating it from al-Zuhrī saying: 'From Khārija ibn Zayd ibn Thābit from his father', and he cited the three stories at length: the story of Zayd with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, then the story of Ḥudhayfa with ʿUthmān as well, then the story of Zayd ibn Thābit missing the verse from Sūrat al-Aḥzāb. It was recorded by al-Ṭabarī. Al-Khaṭīb clarified in al-Mudraj that this was an error on his part, and that he interpolated some chains of transmission into others."
