And other than that was narrated from Abū Qilāba from the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, as a Mursal report:

68 - Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us, saying: ʿAbbād ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us, from ʿAwf, from Abū Qilāba, who said: It reached me that the Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: "The Qur'an was revealed in seven modes: command, prohibition, encouragement, warning, argumentation, stories, and parables." (1)

69 - And there was narrated from Ubayy, from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, regarding that, what Abū Kurayb narrated to me, saying: Muḥammad ibn Fuḍayl narrated to us, from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī Laylā, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ubayy ibn Kaʿb, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said to me: "Allah commanded me to recite the Qur'an in one mode, so I said: 'My Lord, lighten [it] for my nation.' He said: 'Recite it in two modes.' So I said: 'My Lord, lighten [it] for my nation.' So He commanded me to recite it in seven modes from seven gates of Paradise, each of them being healing and sufficient." (2)

And there was narrated from Ibn Masʿūd from his own statement something contrary to all of that.

70 - Which is what Abū Kurayb narrated to us, saying: Al-Muḥāribī narrated to us, from Al-Aḥwaṣ ibn Ḥakīm, from Ḍamra ibn Ḥabīb, from Al-Qāsim ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said: "Allah revealed the Qur'an in five modes: lawful, prohibited, decisive, ambiguous, and parables. So deem lawful the lawful, deem prohibited the prohibited, act upon the decisive, believe in the ambiguous, and take heed from the parables." (3)
