Chapter: Wiping Over the Socks (Jawrabayn)
• I asked Ahmad about wiping over the socks (jawrabayn)? He said: "He may wipe [over them] if they remain firmly on his feet."
• And I saw Ahmad—another time—he saw a thin sock on my foot that had loosened from the calf, and he said: "Wiping over it is not permissible, because it does not remain fixed in place."
• And I heard Ishaq say: "Sandals with socks are in the position of leather socks (khuffayn); one wipes over them, and one wipes over the socks—even if there are no sandals worn with them—as this is an established sunnah. And one does not wipe over sandals alone if there are no socks worn with them."
255 - Rabi' ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Za'idah narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Isma'il ibn Raja', from his father, who said: Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib was in the mosque after he had lost his sight, so I took him to the palace. He said: He urinated, then I took him to the purification vessel (mat-harah). He put his hand [in it] and performed wudu' and wiped over his socks and the sandals he was wearing. Then I took him to the mosque, and he stood up to pray.
Chapter: Wiping Over the Turban ('Imamah)
• Ahmad was asked about wiping over the turban? He said: "There is no harm in wiping [over it]."
• And Ishaq was asked about wiping over the turban? He said: "[It is] strongly [advised/practiced] during travel."
