256 - Hisham ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Hamzah narrated to us, saying: al-'Ala' ibn al-Harith narrated to us, from Makhul, from al-Harith ibn Mu'awiyah al-Kindi and Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl, from Bilal, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over the leather socks (khuffayn) and the head-covering (khimar).
• And I asked Ahmad—another time—I said: A man wipes over his turban, then removes the turban? He said: "He must repeat the wudu'."
o Harb said: He considered it like the leather sock (khuff).
257 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i said—regarding one who wipes over his turban then removes it—: "He must wipe over his head for the prayers he is about to perform."
• And I asked Ahmad—another time—I said: If he wipes over his turban and wipes his forelock or some of his head, then removes the turban, does he repeat the wudu'? He said: "Wiping is only [acceptable if it covers] the entire head; this is how the hadith came, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped his entire head," and it was as if he held the opinion that wiping only part of the head does not suffice.
• And it was said to Ahmad—another time—: If he wipes over the turban but does not wipe his ears? He said: "The ears are part of the head," and it was as if he saw no harm in that. It was said: What if he lifts the turban slightly from his head and scratches his head? He was lenient regarding this, unless he were to undo it.
