• I heard Ishaq - on another occasion - say: "As for Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, three opinions are narrated from him: Some of them said that Ibrahim said, 'There is nothing upon him [i.e., no further obligation].' Yet two opinions are confirmed from him: repeating the ablution, and that he does not have to wash his feet at all. As for washing the feet, it has been mentioned from him without confirmation. And I do not think that the companions of Ibrahim differed regarding him except because he held a school of thought initially, then retracted it."
• I asked 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah, and I said: A man wiped over his leather socks, then took them off? He said: "He washes his feet." He added: "And likewise said 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi," and said: "There are various opinions regarding it."
• I heard Ahmad say: "Al-Hakam, Hammad, al-Sha'bi, al-Zuhri, and Makhul used to say: If he wipes and then takes them off, he performs ablution," and this is the school of thought of Ahmad.
264 - Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us, from Yazid ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Siyah, from al-A'mash, from Abu Zabyan, who said: I saw 'Ali wipe over his sandals, then he took them off, placed them in his sleeve, and prayed the obligatory prayer with them.
Al-A'mash said: I narrated this to Ibrahim, who said: "Is Abu Zabyan still alive?" I said: Yes. He said: "Then when you meet him, inform me." So I met him and came to Ibrahim and informed him. Ibrahim went to him and asked him about that, so he narrated it to him. Then Ibrahim said: "Do you not see that 'Ali wiped over his leather socks, then took them off?"
(1) Thus it appears in the original; perhaps the correct phrasing is: "Qala al-Hakam..." (Al-Hakam said...), or: "Kana al-Hakam... yaqulun..." (Al-Hakam... used to say...).
