265 - Sa'id narrated to us, Abu 'Awana narrated to us, from Qatada, from al-Hasan, who said: "If he wipes over his leather socks then takes them off, he [may still] pray."
Chapter: Wiping over the small leather sock
• Ahmad said: "If the leather sock passes the place of washing, he wipes [over it]."
• And I heard Ahmad - on another occasion - say, regarding the small leather sock: "If it reaches the place of washing - which is the heel - then he wipes [over it]."
• And I asked Ishaq about wiping over the small leather sock? He said: "If it covers the two ankles, wiping is permissible." And Ishaq mentioned the Hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding the pilgrim who does not find sandals; he said: "He wears the two leather socks and cuts them below the two ankles," meaning: that if they are slightly above the ankles, they are considered leather socks.
• Ishaq said: "The Ka'b (ankle) is the protruding bone," by which he means: the 'arqub (heel bone). I said: Is the Ka'b not the middle of the foot? He said: "That is regarding amputation [as a punishment]."
266 - Abu Ma'n narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Ali al-Hanafi narrated to us, saying: Isra'il ibn Yunus narrated to us, saying: Ghalib Abu al-Hudhail informed me, saying: I heard Muhammad ibn 'Ali say: "The Ka'b is the middle of the foot."
Chapter: Wiping over the torn leather sock
• I asked Ahmad, saying: What if the leather sock is torn? He said: "If any part of the foot is exposed, I do not like for him to wipe over them." I said: What if some of the toes are exposed? He said: "I have already said: If any part of the foot is exposed in the leather sock, he does not wipe; but if there is a split or a hole on the side of the leather sock, he may wipe. And if he has socks (jawrab) on his feet, he may wipe [over them] - even if the leather sock is torn." It was said: So, wiping over the socks (jawrab)? He said: "He wipes."
