• And I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "If the leather sock is torn, wipe over it as long as the leather sock remains held on the foot; for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over the two leather socks, and a new leather sock is no more deserving of this name than a torn one, and both are called leather socks."

• And I heard Ishaq say: "Wiping over the two leather socks is permitted for you, and those who stipulated a time limit regarding the tear are ignorant, [specifically] the size of three fingers, to the extent that they even said: 'If it is in various places, then some of that is joined to the rest so that we may consider it; if, when all of it is added together, it equals the size of three fingers, he shall not wipe over them.' This is a view that no scholar ever preceded them in throughout the past, and Ibn 'Uyaynah denounced that with the severest denunciation, to the point that he said: 'None taught them this except the Devil: [the size of] three fingers!'"

267 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: I heard Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah - and he was asked about wiping over the torn leather sock - say: "Yes, he may wipe over it." It was said to Sufyan: "What if it has a tear the size of three fingers?" He said: "He may wipe [over it]."

• And I asked 'Ali ibn 'Abd Allah about the torn leather sock? He said: "If it is torn such that it only hangs by one finger, he may wipe over it."
