• And I heard Ishaq—another time—saying: "If he intends to wipe over the two leather socks, he should wipe their top and their bottom, due to what:
278 - Al-Walid ibn Muslim informed us, from Thawr ibn Yazid, from Raja' ibn Haywah, from the scribe of al-Mughirah, from al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) wiped the top and bottom of his two leather socks."
• Ishaq said: "This is the opinion of Malik and the people of the Hijaz, and some of the people of Iraq adopted it. As for those who see [it permissible to wipe] only the top, their evidence is what we mentioned regarding Qays ibn Sa'd, as he was seen on the bank of the Tigris wiping his two leather socks, and the trace of the fingers was seen on the top of the two leather socks. That is not conclusive, because he who wipes the top and bottom also makes the wiping of the top with the lines of the fingers. It has been authenticated that Ibn 'Umar wiped the top and bottom of them, and al-Zuhri adopted this and said: 'It is the Sunnah.'"
279 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Abu Rawh informed me that he saw Ibn al-Mubarak wiping the top and bottom of his two leather socks(1).
280 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Bakr informed us, saying: Ibn Jurayj informed us, saying: I said to Nafi': "How did Ibn 'Umar wipe over his two leather socks?" He said: "Their tops and their bottoms with his palms. I saw him do that; he was invited to a funeral, so he performed ablution and wiped over them."
(1) Thus it appears in the original, and the correct form is: "wa-asfalahuma" (and their bottom).
• وسمعت إسحاق -مرةً أخرى- يقول: «إذا أَراد المسح على الخُفَّين؛ مَسَح أَعلاه وأَسفَلَه؛ لِمَا:
٢٧٨ - أخبرنا الوَليد بن مُسلِم، عن ثور بن يَزيد، عن رجاء بن حَيوة، عن كاتب المُغيرَة، عن المُغيرَة بن شُعبَة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مَسَحَ أَعلَى الخُفَّين وأَسفَلَهما».
• قال إسحاق: «وهذا رَأي مالِك وأهل الحِجاز، وأَخَذَ به بَعض أهل العِراق، ومَن لم يَرَ إلا أَعلاه فَحُجَّته: ما ذَكَرناه عن قيس بن سَعد، حيث رُئِيَ على شاطئ دِجلَة مَسَحَ على خُفَّيه، فرُئِي أَثَر الأصَابع على ظاهِر الخُفَّين. ولَيس ذلك بِواضِح؛ لأن من مَسَح أَعلاه وأَسفَلَه -أيضًا- فإنه يَجعَل مَسح الأعلى خططًا بالأصابع، وقد صَحَّ أن ابن عُمَر مَسَحَ أَعلاه وأَسفَلَه، فَأَخَذَ بذلك الزُّهري، وقال: «هو السنة»».
٢٧٩ - حدثنا إسحاق، قال: وأخبرني أبو رَوح، أنه رأى ابن المبارَك يَمسَح أَعلَى الخُفَّين وأَسفَلَه (١).
٢٨٠ - حدثنا إسحاق، قال: أبنا محمد بن بكر، قال: أبنا ابن جُرَيج، قال: قلت لنافع: كَيف كان ابن عُمَر يَمسَح على الخُفَّين؟ قال: «ظُهورهما وبُطونهما بِكَفَّيه، رَأيته فَعَل ذلك، دُعِيَ إلى جنازَة، فتوضَّأ، ومَسَحَ عَلَيهما».
