• Ahmad was asked about a man who wiped over socks, then put on sandals, then removed his sandals? He said: "The putting on of the sandals or removing them does not harm him."
299 - Amr ibn Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: I asked al-Awza'i about a man who performed ablution and wore two pairs of leather socks; one over the other, then he became ritually impure (hadatha), so he performed ablution and wiped over the upper one, then he removed the lower one? He said: "You wipe over the lower one for what you are about to face."
Chapter: One who has a leather sock on one of his feet and a sock on the other, does he wipe?
• I asked Ishaq: A man has a leather sock on one of his feet, and a sock on the other, does he wipe over them? He said: "Yes, if the sock is made of wool or soft fine hair (mir'izza)." I said: What if the sock is made of fabric? He said: "He does not wipe over it."
300 - Muhammad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Hassan narrated to us, saying: Sufyan said—regarding wiping over socks—he said: "It is at the level of leather socks." He said: "And it is the same whether they are socks of fabric or wool."
Chapter: One who wiped, then it occurred to him to travel
• And I heard Ishaq say: "If you have wiped over your leather socks while you are a resident (muqim), then it occurred to you to travel, and you have not wiped over them for the full day and night, and you have completed three days and their nights, then you have accounted for what you wiped while you were a resident for part of your day or your night until you prayed with the wiping, then you traveled; you should not exceed the full day and night from the time you began wiping; because the Sunnah has passed for the resident to be a day and a night, and for the traveler to be three. This has become included in both residency and travel, and we do not know of a Sunnah regarding that, and the precaution is to take the lesser of that. Perhaps he began his wiping while he was a resident, until a Sunnah is found regarding that, or it becomes clear—based upon the Sunnah—contrary to what we have said."

(2) Thus it appears in the original, and it seems that something has been omitted from it; perhaps the completion is: "then he removed [them], does he wipe over the lower one? He said..."
