Chapter: The leather sock (khuff) is hit by rain or water—does that suffice for wiping?
• And I heard Ishaq say: "If the leather sock is hit by rain or water is poured upon it until it reaches its top or bottom, it does not suffice for him ever until he intends with that the act of wiping. This is because when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, established the practice of wiping, it became a substitute for washing the feet, and it is not permissible to purify any of the organs of ablution that Allah has commanded to be purified except with a renewal of intention."
301 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, he said: Umar ibn Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, he said: Al-Awza'i was asked about a man who performed ablution, then sprinkled water over his leather socks? He replied: "He should wipe over them, then repeat his prayer." It was said to him: What if water was poured over them and he did not wipe them with his hands? He replied: "That suffices him."
Chapter: Wiping over Splints and Bandages
• I said to Ahmad: A man has his hand set in a splint, and he tied the splints over it while he was not in a state of ablution, then he performed ablution? He replied: "He should wipe over the splints, because the splints are in the position of his body."
302 - Yahya ibn Abd al-Hamid narrated to us, he said: Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from al-Awza'i, from Abu Bakr, from Mujahid, Ata, and Tawus, they said: "Wipe over the splints."
303 - Mahmud narrated to us, he said: Al-Walid narrated to us, he said: Sa'id informed me, from Sulayman ibn Musa, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, that his big toes were wounded, so he put a medicinal dressing over them, and he used to perform ablution over them."
(1) Written twice in the original: "kadhā" (thus), and the proper phrasing is: "juriḥatā, fa-albasahumā" (they were wounded, so he put a dressing on both of them).
