Translation · EN

And if a man exceeds the palms up to the elbows, we do not criticize him if he is among those who consider (wiping to) the palms permissible. But if he considers the palms (alone) invalid, he is ignorant and mistaken. This is because the correct, known, and famous (practice) from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)—which the reliable narrate from the reliable through authentic reports—is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught 'Ammar ibn Yasir (to perform) Tayammum for the face and the palms. And upon this were 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas, al-Sha'bi, 'Ata', Mujahid, Makhul, and others; they considered (the limit to be) the palm. It is not permitted for anyone to claim against them that they did not know (how to perform) Tayammum. Even if they said, 'The forearms are more beloved to us as a matter of preference,' it would be more fitting.

314 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, he said: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, he said: It was said to Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i: 'Describe Tayammum?' So he placed his palms on the earth gently, then lifted them, then wiped one over the other in a gentle wiping motion, then passed them over his face, then over his palms.

315 - And Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, from 'Abd Allah ibn Nafi', he said: Malik was asked about Tayammum, and how far it should reach? He said: 'He should strike a strike for his face, and a strike for his hands, and wipe them up to the elbows.'

وإن جَاوَز الرجل الكَفَّين إلى المِرفَقَين؛ لم نَعِب عَلَيه إذا كان ممن يَرَى الكَفَّين جائزًا، وإن رَأَى الكَفَّين فاسِدًا؛ فقد جَهِل وأَخطَأ؛ وذلك أن الصَّحيح عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم المعروفَ المشهورَ؛ الذي يَرويه الثِّقَة عن الثِّقَة بِالأخبار الصَّحيحَة: أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم عَلَّم عمار بن ياسر التَّيمُّم للوَجه والكَفَّين، وعلى ذلك كان علي بن أبي طالب، وعبد الله بن عَبَّاس، والشعبي، وعَطاء، ومُجاهد، ومَكحُول، وغيرهم؛ يَرَون الكَفّ، ولا يَجوز لأحَدٍ أن يَدَّعي على هؤلاء أنهم لم يَعرِفوا التَّيمُّم، ولو قالوا: «الذِّراعين أَحَبُّ إلَينا اختيارًا»؛ لَكَان أَشبَه».

٣١٤ - حدثنا مَحمود بن خالِد، قال: ثنا الوَليد بن مُسلِم، قال: قيل لأبي عَمرو الأوزاعي: صِف التَّيمُّم؟ فَوَضَعَ كَفَّيه على الأرض وَضعًا رَفيقًا، ثم رَفَعَهما، ثم أَمَرَّ إحداهما على الأخرى مَسحًا رفيقًا، ثم أَمَرَّ بهما على وَجهه، ثم على كَفَّيه.

٣١٥ - وحدثنا محمد بن يَحيى، عن عبد الله بن نافع، قال: سُئل مالك عن التَّيمُّم، وأين يَبلُغ به؟ قال: «يَضرِب ضَربَةً لِوَجهه، وضَربَةً لِيَدَيه، ويَمسَحهما إلى ⦗١٩٠⦘ المِرفَقَين.
