Chapter: One who has water with him on a journey, but forgets it and performs tayammum.
• I said to Ishaq ibn Ibrahim: A man was on a journey and had water with him, but he forgot that he had water, so he performed tayammum and prayed. When he finished his prayer, he remembered that he had water? He said: "He should perform wudu and repeat it."
• And Ishaq also said: "Whenever he forgets and does not remember until he has performed tayammum and prayed, it is permissible. However, if he finds the water during the time in which the prayer is permissible, then it is more beloved to us that he repeats it, because some [scholars] consider this—if the water was in his baggage—to be negligence (tafrit)."
• And I heard Ishaq—on another occasion—saying: "Whenever there is water in your baggage, and you forget until you have prayed, then realize it, repeat the prayer; for you are negligent (mufarrit), since you were obligated to seek it and you neglected to do so, even though the water was in your baggage and you were able to find it. Tayammum is only [permitted] when the inability to obtain [water] arises; but if you were wasteful, you repeat [the prayer]."
• I said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal: A man is on a journey, the time for prayer arrives, and the water is off the path; if he goes to the water, his companions will move on, leaving him alone, and he fears [for his safety]? He said: "If it is like that, he should not go to the water."
• I asked Ishaq, I said: A man is on a journey, and the water is off the path; if he goes to the water, his companions will move on and leave him behind? He said: "He should not go to the water; he should perform tayammum, for I fear [for him]."
