Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 148Chapter: A traveler who becomes junub (ritually impure) and has only a small amount of water

Translation · EN

357 - Al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, saying: I heard Ibn al-Mubarak being asked about a shepherd from whom water is two or three miles away. He mentioned, citing Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab, that he said: "He performs tayammum and prays."

Chapter: A traveler who becomes junub (in a state of major ritual impurity) while possessing a small amount of water

• Ishaq was asked about a man on a journey who has a small amount of water and has become junub. He said: "He performs wudu and tayammum. If he fears for himself (due to) thirst, he performs tayammum."

358 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Nafi', who said: Malik said regarding one who experiences a wet dream (ihtalama) while on a journey and cannot find water except enough for wudu, and he will not be thirsty until he reaches water: "He should wash his private parts and whatever of that impurity touched him with that water, then he should perform tayammum with clean earth as Allah has commanded him."

• And I heard Ishaq another time saying: "If you are in a desert and you have with you a small amount of water, and you fear for your life, then perform tayammum and save the water for yourself; because you have been granted a concession for tayammum in a state of necessity. Therefore, if you are able to do that, and you have with you enough water to quench your thirst or the thirst of those with you, and if you were to perform wudu with it, you would fear for your life; it is permissible for you to keep the water, because it is as if, at that moment, you do not have it at all."

359 - Al-Rabi' ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Za'idah ibn Qudamah narrated to us, from Layth, from Tawus, who said: "If you are on a journey, and you do not have with you any water except for your lips, then perform tayammum and leave your water."
