368 - He said: And al-Walid narrated to us, from Malik and Sufyan al-Thawri, who both said: "Tayammum does not suffice him except with an intention. But if he teaches him wudu and then performs wudu [himself], it suffices him."
Chapter: Tayammum with Snow, and Performing Wudu with It
• And I heard Ishaq say: "Do not perform tayammum with snow, and do not perform wudu with it, unless you heat it so that it becomes water; then you perform wudu with it. This is mentioned from Umar ibn al-Khattab, and from the people of knowledge among the Tabi'in and those who came after them."
369 - Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Suwayd ibn Abd al-Aziz informed us of that, from Abu Jabirah Zayd ibn Jabirah, from Dawud ibn Husayn, from Nafi', from Ibn Umar, who said: Snow affected the people during the time of Umar ibn al-Khattab, so he spread out a rug and then prayed upon it, and said: "Snow is not to be used for tayammum, nor is prayer to be performed upon it."
370 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid narrated to us, saying: I said to Abu 'Amr: I did not find clay or earth, but I found snow? He said: "If it is soft snow that has water, perform wudu with it as one performs wudu. If it is dry like flour, do not perform tayammum with it, but perform tayammum with the dust of the padding of your saddle or the like."
Chapter: The One Performing Tayammum Who Does Not Find Pure Earth (al-Sa'id)
• And I heard Ishaq say: "If you do not find earth with which to perform tayammum, and there is dust in your garment, your saddle, or your packsaddle with which it is possible to perform tayammum—and its possibility means the arrival of the dust onto your palms—then it is permissible. Do not perform tayammum with anything on trees or garments, unless it is dust that clings to the hand such that you can perceive it, just as a man places his hand on the pure earth (al-sa'id) and there clings to it what makes its trace evident."
