396 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, saying: 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Wahid narrated to us, saying: Al-Awza'i was asked about a man having intercourse with his wife; is it permissible for him to look at the private part when he has intercourse with her? He said: "If he does so, there is no harm."
Chapter: Concealment during Intercourse and Bathing
• I heard Ishaq say: "It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Whoever approaches his wife, let him conceal himself, and let them not strip naked like donkeys; for if they do that, the angels depart from between them.'"
• I heard Ishaq also say: "It has reached us that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: 'If one of you strips naked for bathing, let him conceal himself with a piece of a wall or with his camel.'"
• He said: "Whatever is possible for him to conceal himself with, it is permissible. And if he orders a man to turn his back to him until he finishes his bath, that is permissible. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered Abu Dharr to bathe, and ordered someone to cover him, and others among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did likewise. If a woman is forbidden to be married to a man, it is permissible [for him to have her assist him] if he instructs her in advance not to look at him. Uthman ibn 'Affan said to his wife's servant: 'Pour [water] over me, and do not look at me, for you are not lawful for me.'"
[Chapter: Entering Water without a Wrapper (Mizar)]
• I asked Abu 'Abd Allah Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and said: "A man enters the water without a wrapper?" He strongly disliked it. I said: "In all waters?" He said: "Yes." It was said: "If he enters the water, may he remove his wrapper?" He said: "No."
(1) Perhaps the following was omitted here: "And if a woman covers [him]," or something similar.
