Volume 1 · Page 165

Translation · EN

404 - Mahmud narrated to us, saying: 'Umar narrated to us, saying: I heard al-Awza'i say—regarding taking from the beard: 'There is no harm in taking whatever exceeds a handful.'

• I said to Ishaq: 'Is trimming the mustache (ihfa') more beloved to you or clipping it (qass)?' He said: 'He should trim it, but not shave it off entirely.'

405 - 'Isa ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: al-Firyabi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Ibn 'Ajlan, from 'Ubaydallah ibn Abi Rafi', who said: I saw Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, Salamah ibn al-Akwa', Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, and Abu Usayd; they would clip their mustaches, approaching a shave.

406 - al-Musayyab ibn Wadih narrated to us, saying: I heard Rawwad ibn al-Jarrah Abu 'Isam—sixty-five years ago—saying: 'Trimming the mustache for an old man is a Sunnah, but for a young man, it is a display of vanity (shuhrah).'

407 - al-Musayyab said: Abu Ishaq al-Fazari used to trim his mustache, as did Makhlad ibn al-Husayn.

408 - Ibn al-Mubarak would not trim his mustache, and he would dye it.

409 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: Isma'il said: I asked Shurahbil: 'How did you see them taking from their mustaches?' He said: 'Along the edges of the lip, and they should not overdo it.'

Notes

(1) Thus it appears in the original; the correct reading is "ra'aytuhum" (I saw them). (2) Thus it appears in the original; the proper form is "wa la yulhifun" (and they should not overdo it).
