• Ahmad was asked - another time - about a man who calls the adhan while he is in a state of janabah (major ritual impurity)? He said: "He should not call the adhan." It was said: What if he is not in a state of wudu'? He granted a concession for that.
• And Ahmad was asked - another time - about a person in a state of janabah calling the adhan? He said: "No." It was said: If he does it, should he repeat it? He said: "He should not call the adhan."
454 - Ahmad ibn Nasr narrated to us, saying: Hibban ibn Musa narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak was asked about a person in a state of janabah: May he call the adhan? He said: "It does not please me, and if he does, I do not see it as anything but permissible, though it is more beloved to me that this does not happen in the mosque."
455 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us, saying: It was said to Abu 'Amr al-Awza'i: A mu'adhdhin who called the adhan while he was in a state of janabah, then remembered? He said: "He should perform ghusl, and his adhan has already passed."
456 - Muhammad ibn al-Wazir narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid narrated to us, saying: It was said to Abu 'Amr: What if he breaks his wudu' during his adhan? He said: "He should continue his adhan and not break it off until he completes it."
He said: Abu 'Amr said: "I have never heard of a mu'adhdhin who repeated his adhan nor broke it off." It was said to Abu 'Amr: What if he breaks his wudu' during his iqamah? He said: "If he is alone, he should break it off." It was said to Abu 'Amr: What if he broke his wudu', then performed the iqamah for prayer, and the people prayed with his iqamah, and then he left and performed wudu'? He said: "Their prayer is valid."
Chapter: How should he behave during his adhan?
• I said to Ahmad: When the mu'adhdhin calls the adhan, should he put his index fingers in his ears? He said: "Yes." I said: Should he turn around in the minaret? He said: "He should turn to his right and his left," but as for turning all the way around, it seemed as though it did not please him.
