• I heard Ishaq say: "The mu'adhdhin should insert his fingers into his ears and keep his feet fixed in their place when he calls the adhan. He should face the qibla for the takbir and the tashahhud, then turn to his right for 'Hayya 'ala al-salah' (Come to prayer) and to his left for 'Hayya 'ala al-falah' (Come to success), then face the qibla for the iqamah and the takbir."
457 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn Artah, from 'Awn ibn Abi Juhayfah, from his father, who said: "I saw Bilal calling the adhan, inserting his fingers into his ears, and turning around during his adhan."
Chapter: Regarding the one who walks during the iqamah
• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal about a man who walks during the iqamah. He said: "What I love most is that he should perform the iqamah in his place. Nothing has reached me regarding this except the hadith of Bilal, that he said to the Prophet (peace be upon him): 'Do not precede me with Amin.'"
• And he was asked - another time - about a man who walks during the iqamah? He disliked it.
• I heard Ishaq ibn Ibrahim say: "When the mu'adhdhin performs the iqamah, he should remain in his place of iqamah. If he misses any part of the initial takbir (tahrim) of the prayer with the Imam, he will still attain its merit - God willing."
He said: "Bilal said: 'O Messenger of God, do not precede me with Amin,' and likewise Abu Hurayrah and others among the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) said the same to their Imams. In this, there is a clear indication that he should not walk during the iqamah, because if they had walked, they would not have missed attaining the initial takbir with the Imams. Ibn al-Mubarak observed what we have described and said: 'He may perhaps attain in his remaining stationary the same reward he would have attained otherwise.'"
