Chapter: The Adhan While Traveling
• Ahmad was asked about the adhan while traveling, and he said: "Yes." It was said: "What of the hadith of Malik ibn al-Huwayrith? He said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me and a companion of mine: 'When you both travel, call the adhan, then perform the iqamah, then let the older of you lead you in prayer.'" He replied: "Yes."
Ahmad said—regarding the interpretation of "the older of you": "It means they were close to each other in [their knowledge of] the recitation."
492 - 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn al-Dahhak narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, from 'Utbah ibn Humayd al-Dabbi, from Khalid ibn Mihran al-Hadhdha', from Abu Qilabah, from Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, who said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) along with a companion of mine, and he said: "When you both pray, call the adhan, then perform the iqamah, then let the older of you lead you in prayer." He said: "And we were close to each other," meaning: in knowledge.
