495 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, from Ibn Thawban, from 'Ubadah ibn Nusayy, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanam, who said: I said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal: 'A man forgot the adhan and the iqamah?' He said: 'His prayer has passed; the adhan and the iqamah are not among the obligatory parts of the prayer; they are only from the virtues one should adopt and something for which people are called.'
496 - 'Amr ibn 'Uthman narrated to us, saying: Baqiyyah narrated to us, from 'Ali al-Hamdani, from Abi Jamrah, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was asked about a man who forgot the adhan and the iqamah? He said: 'Allah has pardoned my community for mistakes and forgetfulness.'
497 - 'Amr narrated to us, saying: al-Walid narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Amr said—regarding a man who forgot the iqamah and remembered while in his prayer—he said: 'He should withdraw after completing an even number of rak'ahs, then perform the iqamah and pray.' I asked Abu 'Amr: 'What about one who forgot the iqamah until he finished his prayer?' He said: 'He should repeat his prayer during its time; if its time has passed, then it has passed.'
Chapter: He Who Performs the Adhan Should Also Perform the Iqamah
• Ahmad ibn Hanbal was asked about a man who performs the adhan and then leaves; should someone else perform the iqamah? He mentioned, regarding Abu Mahdhurah, that he came when a man had already performed the adhan, so Abu Mahdhurah performed the adhan and the iqamah. He mentioned the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): 'Whoever performs the adhan should perform the iqamah.' He did not specify one over the other, although it seemed as if he leaned towards [the one who performed] the adhan [should perform] the iqamah.
