Chapter: Regarding al-tathwib (the additional call) in the morning prayer (Fajr).
• I asked Ahmad ibn Hanbal, saying: "If he performs the adhan and it has become bright (asfar), should he perform al-tathwib?" He said: "Yes, he should perform al-tathwib; he should not abandon al-tathwib in the Fajr (prayer)."
• And I heard Ishaq say: "It has reached us from Abu Mahdhurah and Bilal regarding the adhan of Fajr; when they said: 'Hayya 'ala al-falah' (Hasten to success), they would say: 'Al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm' (Prayer is better than sleep, prayer is better than sleep)."
501 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Bishr ibn 'Umar narrated to us, saying: Malik was asked about al-tathwib, and he did not consider al-tathwib acceptable except in the morning prayer; when he reached: 'Hayya 'ala al-falah', he would perform al-tathwib.
502 - Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Hushaym narrated to us, saying: Ibn 'Awn informed us, from Ibn Sirin, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: "Al-tathwib in the morning prayer was: when the mu'adhdhin said: 'Hayya 'ala al-salah, hayya 'ala al-falah', he would say: 'Al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm, al-salatu khayrun min al-nawm'."
Chapter: Regarding when several people perform the adhan from the minaret on the day of Jumu'ah (Friday).
• I said to Ahmad: "What about the adhan on the day of Jumu'ah if several people perform the adhan from the minaret?" He said: "There is no harm in that. Bilal and Ibn Umm Maktum used to perform the adhan for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and Abu Mahdhurah came after a man had already performed the adhan before him, so Abu Mahdhurah also performed the adhan."
