522 - Abu al-Azhar narrated to us, he said: Abd al-Mun'im ibn Nu'aym narrated to us, he said: Bahr ibn Muslim narrated to us, from al-Hasan and Ata, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Bilal: "O Bilal, leave between your adhan and your iqamah an amount of time that allows the eater to finish his food, the drinker to finish his drink, and the one who needs to relieve himself to finish his business."
Chapter: The adhan is not permissible except for one who understands its Sunnah, and sitting between the adhan and the iqamah.
Ishaq said: "The adhan is not permissible except for one who comprehends the adhan and knows its Sunnah. Once he knows that, it is permissible for him to call the adhan, whether he is a boy, an adult, a blind man, or a slave, although we prefer those who have sight because the mu'adhdhin needs to look at the times of the prayers and manage the observation of the sun, the moon, the stars, and the shadows."
And I heard Ishaq say: "When the mu'adhdhin calls the adhan, he should sit for a while during all prayers, even for the Maghrib prayer; the sitting is necessary due to what has been authentically reported from Bilal, when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught him the adhan and ordered him to wait between the adhan and the iqamah for a duration sufficient for the sleeper to awaken and for those dispersed to gather for prayer, and he called the adhan in pairs and performed the iqamah once."
523 - Yahya al-Himmani narrated to us, Sharik narrated to us, Husayn narrated to us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Abd Allah ibn Zayd, he said: "I saw the one who called the adhan in a dream; he called the adhan for Maghrib and sat for a while between the adhan and the iqamah."
(1) Thus it is in the original, and the correct version is: "Yahya."
