Masa'il Harb al-Kirmani: Book of Purification (Taharah) and Prayer (Salah) - Edited by al-Surayyi'
Volume 1 · Page 203Chapter: The Muezzin shifting his feet and placing his fingers in his ears

Translation · EN

Chapter: The mu'adhdhin moves his feet from their position and places his fingers in his ears.

  • I heard Ishaq say: "If one is calling the adhan in a minaret, on a hill, or upon any elevated ground, and desires to let those around him hear, it is permissible for him to move his feet from their position in order to exert greater effort in raising his voice. The mu'adhdhin was also commanded to place his fingers in his ears to help with the intensity of the voice."

524 - Ishaq narrated to us, he said: Abu Haywah al-Himsi narrated to us, he said: Sa'id ibn Sinan narrated to us, from Abu al-Zahiriyah, from Abu Shajarah Kathir ibn Murrah, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The first one to call the adhan in the heavens was Jibril." Umar ibn al-Khattab heard him and informed the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) of what he had heard, so he said: "Rise, O Bilal, and call the adhan." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded him to place his fingers in his ears, seeking assistance thereby for his voice.

Chapter: Waiting for the Imam when the mu'adhdhin has performed the iqamah.

  • And I heard Abu Ya'qub say: "If the mu'adhdhin performs the iqamah for prayer and the Imam has not yet arrived, the people should wait for him while sitting. They used to consider it desirable to wait for the Imam for a duration equivalent to the time it takes for the mu'adhdhin to descend."

525 - Ishaq said: Ismail ibn Ibrahim has informed us, from Abd al-Aziz ibn Suhayb, from Anas, who said: The prayer was called (iqamah), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was in a private conversation with a man, and he did not rise for the prayer until some of the people became drowsy.

526 - Mahmud ibn Khalid narrated to us, he said: Marwan ibn Muhammad narrated to us, he said: Mu'awiyah ibn Salam narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us, from Abd Allah ibn Abi Qatadah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the prayer is called (iqamah), do not stand until you see me; maintain tranquility."
